A Man Almost Gave Up The Dog Adopted From The Shelter Until He Found A Letter
Human beings have had a loving and mutually beneficial relationship with dogs since long ago. Here's a heart-warming story about that. Anthony adopted a dog from a shelter but was disappointed when he couldn’t seem to connect with it. He then decided to give it back to the shelter until a mysterious note changed his mind.
1. Anthony's Decision To Adopt A Dog
Anthony had started a new life in a new town. On the one hand, he felt excited about this new environment; on the other hand, he felt a little bit of loneliness. He then, as many single young guys tend to do, decided to adopt a dog.
2. Collect Information
He started to collect information from the local paper and tried to find a dog suitable for him. Luckily, he found a black one that he wanted to take home. He called the shelter asking whether this dog was adopted and felt extremely pleased to learn that even though many people had already inquired about the pup, they’d not found a suitable owner yet. Knowing he might be the perfect fit, Anthony headed off to the shelter.
3. Dog Reggie
Anthony learned that the dog's name was Reggie when he arrived at the shelter. He also noticed that the previous owner had provided a bed, food bowl, and toys. It's unusual for a deserted dog to be given so much to ensure its comfort. But Anthony didn't think a lot about this at the very beginning.
4. First Night
Anthony successfully took Reggie home, and the first night was rough. Reggie was so frightened and refused to come inside the house, and Anthony had to pick him up and carry him through the doorway to get him in. The following days would not go that smoothly either.
5. Something Wrong With The Dog
Reggie's mood didn't seem to improve in the following days. He looked sad as if it had experienced some tragic events. Anthony called the shelter again and wanted to learn what had happened to the dog, but the shelter had no idea of the reason for his troubles.
6. Decide To Return Reggie
After two weeks, Reggie still hadn’t changed his demeanor. Anthony felt heartbroken and made the reluctant decision to return Reggie to the shelter. He was disappointed that he was not a perfect owner and hoped Reggie could find happiness with another family. He went to look for the shelter's number and unexpectedly found an unopened envelope.
7. A Mysterious Envelope
Anthony saw the unopened envelope, while he was rummaging through the boxes looking for the number. He hesitated as to whether he should open it. At the same time, something even stranger happened. Reggie watched Anthony intently for the first time as if it wanted him to open it.
8. A Note In The Envelope
Anthony finally opened the envelope and pulled out a note from inside. It read: "To whoever gets my dog: Well, I can't say that I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie's new owner." There was more.
9. More Details About The Envelope
"I'm not even happy writing it," the note continued. "If you're reading this, it means I just got back from my last car ride with my Lab after dropping it off at the shelter." Then, the letter took a very sad turn. "Reggie knew something was different," it read. "I have packed up his bed and toys before and set them by the back door before a trip, but this time, Reggie seemed like he knew something was wrong." Anthony felt confused - who was this mysterious owner, and why had he abandoned Reggie?
10. Reggie's Story
Anthony went on to find the answer, and he could sense the author's deep love for Reggie. Because the author of the note knew exactly Reggie's hobbies, such as the fact that he loved tennis balls, and that he could even fit two inside his mouth. He warned not to throw the balls by any roads because he would chase them. He also claimed that Reggie had accepted some training, so he knew basic commands like sit and roll over and more advanced ones such as shake and high five.
11. Words To New Owner
The letter went on: "Finally, be patient with him. I have never been married, so it's only been me in his whole life. He's used to going everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can." Anthony couldn't take his eyes off the page. The original owner also wrote that Reggie loved to be around people, especially him, which meant the transition of living someone new was hard, and that Reggie hated the vet. Then the writer dropped a bombshell that Reggie's name was not, in fact, Reggie. What was his real name?
12. Named Tank
The author revealed the dog's real name was Tank, even though it had gotten used to Reggie and would even respond to the new name. Anthony soon realized that this dog's real name was related to its former owner, and that's another sad story in itself.
13. The Former Owner
Reggie's former owner was actually a US soldier, and he named the little guy Tank. That was what he drove. The soldier, who revealed himself as Paul Mallory, had given the army express instructions on what to do if anything happened to him: send Tank to a local shelter, and help him find a loving home.
14. Follow Mallory's Wish
Tragically, Mallory did end up passing away while saving his fellow comrades. The army followed Mallory's final wish and gave Tank to a shelter, where it eventually met Anthony. Since discovering all the facts, Anthony gave up sending Reggie to the shelter and decided to make an effort to help Reggie to accept him.
15. Happily Being Together
Thankfully, Reggie ultimately warmed up to Anthony, and they strive to honor Mallory's legacy through bravery and kindness. Anthony does not feel lonely any more, and he gave all his patience and love to Reggie. We guess that Mallory would be delighted with this new owner, and feel peaceful in heaven.
