Woman Brought Dying Puppy To Chimp Sanctuary, But She Never Expected This
Those who dedicate their lives to rescuing abandoned animals won't walk past a helpless animal, doing nothing. This was just the case for Jenny Desmond, who runs an animal sanctuary. One day on her way back to the facility, Jenny saw a dying puppy and took it over without hesitation, but she had no clue that something incredible would happen.
1. This Puppy Was In Poor Health
There are animals that are abandoned every day across the world. This small puppy was just one of those poor creatures. It was found sitting on the roadside in a remote village in Liberia, and the little guy looked as if he was about ready to die. None of the locals cared for the desperate pup when a woman picked him up.
2. Jenny Desmond Noticed The Puppy Needed Help
The woman is Jenny Desmond, who operates with her husband Jimmy, the Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection (LCRP) facility in West Africa. The couple mainly works to rescue wild and orphaned chimpanzees from the illegal bushmeat and wildlife trades, but all species have access to the care of the LCRP. Jenny was driving through the village when she saw the pup.
3. Who Knows How Long He Has Been Suffering In These Conditions?
Jenny stopped to help the puppy and found that it had worms and was suffering from a fever. Additionally, the pup was severely underweight and had eye and skin infections. Jenny decided to bring him back to the facility but only did so after getting an earful from the villagers. When holding the puppy in her lap, Jenny was shocked to notice the pup's exact condition.
4. Jenny Had To Argue With The Villagers
Oddly, Jenny got resistance from nearby villagers about rescuing this puppy. She didn't want to pay them for him since none of them cared for him anyway. "You see he's being eaten alive," Jenny argued with them, holding him out to show them his scabbed coat. "You want me to leave him here and he's gonna die?" Apparently, saving the puppy wasn't going to be simple.
5. She Vowed To Never Bring Him Back
"If the dog becomes better, do you want me to bring the dog back to you?" Jenny asked the villagers. It sounded a good reason for them to allow Jenny to take the puppy away. "I'm not bringing him back. I'm just saying that," Jenny later said as she and her colleagues drove away. She was certain that the puppy would never have a good life in that village.
6. They Weren't Sure He Was Going To Make It
The sick puppy was lucky enough to meet Jenny since he'd have died in two days for sure if she hadn't rescued him. Upon further inspection, Jenny found that the pup was missing huge patches of fur, and his skin was covered in dirt and sores. Jenny wanted to give the puppy a fighting chance at life even though he didn't seem to make it. Obviously, it's going to take a lot to help this puppy, but luckily, someone at the sanctuary knew just what he needed.
7. The Puppy Received What Was Probably His First Bath
When Jenny returned to the facility, the first thing she did was to give the pup a much-needed bath. Jenny gently scrubbed out the dirt caked into the puppy's fur as he stood helpless under the running water. This was Jenny's second nature. "She's rescued a lot. She rescued chickens, she rescued grasshoppers, owls... she's rescued a lot of things," said one of her colleagues. Jenny has never turned a blind eye to any animal in need.
8. They Named Him Snafu
The Desmonds named this little guy Snafu. When he came to the Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection facility, Snafu was a timid and fragile puppy, and he didn't have the strength to carry on. But amazingly, Snafu made a strong recovery in a matter of days, and it seemed the rescue was paying off. However, there were some important things they had to take care of.
9. Treatment Was The Next Step
Snafu was treated right away so that he could start healing. Jimmy is a wildlife vet and consultant who specializes in emerging disease and the illegal wildlife trade. Jimmy operated a treatment underneath the puppy's skin. The puppy had some serious infections that would have caused a fatal disease had he not been rescued. The couple helped Snafu recover day by day, but they still weren't sure if he was getting any better.
10. Snafu Was So Hungry He Was Digesting His Muscle
Snafu was so malnourished and starving that he had started digesting his own muscles. Jenny and Jimmy gave him plenty of food and water to nourish him back to health. When given the food and water, Snafu would stand there, inhaling it all for quite some time. The puppy clearly had been deprived of these necessities while fending for himself in that village.
11. His Hair Started Growing Back In Five Days
By the fifth day under the Desmonds' care, the puppy's fur began to grow back. "He didn't even look like he had fur or hair," Jenny said in reference to when she first found him. "There used to be big chunks of skin [falling out] and there's not that much of it anymore." The puppy was presenting incredible signs of improvement in less than a week of being cared for.
12. Snafu's Recovery Took A Turn
"Everyday we kind of felt like he was getting a little bit better but with most animals that we rescue, there's a day when they kind of take a turn," said Jenny. Slowly but certainly, that day would come for Snafu. Snafu's spirit was changed within days at the LCRP. The once-timid puppy soon began to move around playfully. Sanfu was on the mend, and finally, he started to look like a completely different dog.
13. They Put On The "Cone Of Shame"
As Snafu turned more playful, the couple had to be more careful about his treatment. When they first got the pup, Snafu had multiple open wounds that were oozing with puss. "It was starting to heal with the medicine but then he was biting it, so we put the collar on him," Jenny explained. Part of Snafu's treatment involved wearing the cone of shame, though we knew for sure Snafu wasn't ashamed to be healing.
14. Snafu Got Along With The Rescued Chimps
Even with the restrictive collar around his neck, Snafu still felt well enough to begin interacting with everyone at the sanctuary, especially his new animal friends. Not only did he not mind sharing food with the other dogs at the facility, but he got along well with the chimpanzees. For their part, the chimps loved to care for Snafu by carrying him down the stairs when he's small.
15. Snafu Essentially Grew Up With The Chimps
Under the couple's vigilant care, it wasn't long before Snafu not only started healing, but he also started growing as well. Within a year, Snafu had grown into a full-sized dog. Besides, he was happy to interact with the rescued chimpanzees in the sanctuary. Snafu indeed got his second chance at life, but that wasn't the end of his story. When Snafu grew into a full-sized dog, his situation changed when the couple realized he wasn't getting the attention he deserved.
16. Snafu's Future Was Up In The Air
Snafu looked like a totally different dog within a year of being cared for. It was all thanks to Jenny and Jimmy, who had the resources and hearts of love that Snafu was able to get a full recovery. Life seemed pretty perfect at that time, but suddenly, the Desmonds realized they couldn't care for Snafu any more. As new animals came in need of their help, space at the sanctuary was getting tight.
17. The Desmonds Wanted Snafu To Have A Life He Deserved
Plenty of animals find their way to the LCRP, but they barely have to say goodbye. Even if Jenny never discriminated against what animals she cared for, she realized that rescuing chimpanzees was her and Jimmy's priority. Besides, the couple wanted Snafu to have the life he deserved. They needed a solution so that Snafu could continue to get the love they gave him.
18. They Couldn't Give Snafu The Attention He Deserved
Jenny and Jimmy fell in love with Snafu, and they were proud of his recovery, but their work at the facility had to come first. Running the LCRP involved lots of travel since they rescued chimpanzees from all over Africa. Their travel prevented them from giving Snafu the care and attention he deserved. Luckily, they came up with a perfect solution for Snafu's situation.
19. Jenny's Nieces Adopted Snafu
Jenny found the perfect people to adopt Snafu, and it was her sister's family in Colorado. "He's moving to Colorado to live with my nieces, and he's gonna have a great, wonderful life," said Jenny. "Look at him, he's cute, happy, [and] fat." It was surely a huge improvement from when Jenny first saved Snafu in that village. She only hoped that Snafu would enjoy his new life.
20. Snafu Is Thriving In Colorado
Snafu loved his life at the Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection facility. He especially loved his new parents - Jenny and Jimmy. They could only hope that Snafu would continue to be happy when he moved to Colorado. Fortunately, that was exactly the case! Snafu loved to play with Jenny's nieces and to have a new family that loved him just as much as Jenny and Jimmy.
